LUIS SALVADOR CARMONA (Valladolid, 1708 - Madrid, 1767) - Virgin and

Descriptio Polychrome and gilded carved wood. Measurements: 94 x 76 x 37 cm. This sculptural group by Luis Salvador Carmona depicts the Virgin with the Child, crowned and seated on clouds surrounded by cherubs, accompanied by Saint Dominic and Saint Francis of Assisi in a devotional pose. The triangular composition harmoniously organizes the figures, emphasizing the centrality of the Virgin as the focal point of the work. The polychromy, applied in vivid and delicately executed tones, adds depth and realism, while the faint remains of gilding in some areas provide a subtle touch of luminosity without overwhelming the overall composition. The details of Saint Francis’s attire, adorned with fine sgraffito lines, showcase exquisite craftsmanship, enhancing the refined character of the piece. The flowing and detailed drapery, along with the expressive faces and glass eyes, reinforces the naturalistic style characteristic of Carmona. The attribution is supported by stylistic elements found in documented works by the artist, such as Saint Francis of Assisi in Plasencia, which displays a similar treatment of folds and facial expressions. This group reflects the devotional traditions of the 18th century, particularly those associated with the Dominican and Franciscan orders. Luis Salvador Carmona, a distinguished member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, is celebrated for his technical mastery and his ability to convey spirituality in his works. This sculptural group stands as a remarkable example of his artistic maturity, balancing Baroque dynamism with naturalism. The piece is in good condition, allowing its artistic and symbolic quality to be fully appreciated as a testament to Spanish Baroque imagery.
