LUI SHOU-KWAN (1919-1975) ABSTRACT NO. 1, 1960 吕寿琨 No.1 15.5cm x 31cm PROVENANCE: From a Private English Collector. NOTE: Lui Shou-Kwan was a pioneering figure in Hong Kong’s modern ink painting movement. Dated 1960 and painted in Hong Kong, Abstract No. 1 is a rare example of his early phase of ink innovation. Its dynamic interplay of vibrant colour washes and expressive black ink strokes reflects Lui's early experimentation with Western abstraction to manifest Chinese spirituality. Such colourful abstraction is unusual in his oeuvre, as his practice soon evolved towards the 'Zen' paintings of the later 1960s. Lui’s work was exhibited in the United Kingdom and the United States during the 1960s, including at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, in 1968. The present work was collected by Michael Spencer while in Hong Kong.
