Lucía Laurent - XL - "Elegancia Escarlata"

Lucía Lauren (LILI) is a Cuban artist with essentially self-taught plastic arts training, graduated in Social Communication from the University of Havana. Her relationship with the image began long before she dedicated herself professionally to painting. Photography was her first creative territory: through it she developed a special sensitivity to composition, visual balance, gesture, and the representation of the human figure. Subsequently, she spent several years exploring the world of tattooing, a decisive stage for understanding the importance that line, silhouette, simplification of forms, and graphic clarity acquire in her current painting. Finally she found in the plastic arts a much wider space for expression. Painting allowed her to reunite those previous experiences and transform them into an intimate and recognizable universe, built mainly with acrylic on canvas. Lucía Lauren’s work revolves especially around women, nature, flowers, and animals, with a recurring presence of the cat as a silent companion of her protagonists. They are scenes that rarely seek to narrate extraordinary events. On the contrary, the artist seems interested in small moments of calm: a woman holding her cat, a figure surrounded by flowers, a glass of wine, an imagined garden, or simply a moment of contemplation. Her painting starts from a marked visual synthesis. Lucía eliminates much of the secondary information to preserve only what she deems essential. Serene faces, large areas of color, defined contours, and flat shapes build immediately legible images, yet filled with sensitivity. In her language we find echoes of contemporary illustration and naïve painting, along with decorative references close to Art Deco and Art Nouveau. However, these elements appear reinterpreted from a personal sensibility, warmer, more everyday, and feminine. One of the most interesting aspects of her work is the use of color. Powdered pinks, terracottas, ochres, mustards, and cream tones coexist with deep blacks, blue-green greens, intense reds, and very clean whites. In some compositions the palette is delicate and almost domestic; in others, the chromatic contrast takes on a clearly graphic intensity. The woman occupies the center of practically her entire pictorial universe. She is not represented as a heroic or distant character, but from a tranquil, elegant, and introspective femininity. They are figures with serene gazes, slow poses, and restrained gestures. There is glamour, but it is an intimate and silent glamour. Cats play a particularly interesting role. More than mere decorative elements, they act as symbols of companionship, independence, tenderness, and emotional refuge. In works where woman and animal embrace, the curves of the human body and the shapes of the cat nearly fuse, turning the composition into a representation of affection. Flowers and vegetation fulfill a similar function. They surround the protagonists, appear on their dresses, or blend into the backgrounds until, at times, the boundary between figure and nature blurs. In this way, woman, nature, and the animal world end up forming the same sensibility. In works like the figure embracing the cat on a red background, Lucía radically reduces the palette to build the image through the contrast between black, white, and red. The stripes of the dress cease to be merely a print and become the main compositional resource: they surround both characters and focus the entire scene on the gesture of the embrace. The result conveys protection, intimacy, and silence. In other pieces, such as the woman seated beside the cat and the glass of wine, the artist develops a composition closer to contemporary design. The terracotta of the dress dialogues with soft pinks, beiges, and blue-green, creating a sophisticated image without feeling cold. The protagonist performs no specific action; she simply exists within her space. Precisely that absence of drama constitutes a large part of the work’s charm. Thus, Lucía Lauren develops a painting that appears simple but is carefully constructed. Her language does not rely on ostentatious technical virtuosity, but on the ability to reduce a scene until finding its essential emotion. Her universe is feminine, botanical, domestic, and affective. It features everyday beauty, relationships with animals, care, contemplation, and nature as a sanctuary. Her paintings possess a notably attractive quality: they can seem decorative at first glance, but behind that beauty lies a constant search for harmony, sensitivity, and serenity. In a contemporary landscape where many images seek to grab attention through excess, Lucía Lauren takes the opposite path: she simplifies. And it is precisely in that simplicity that a large part of the personality of her work resides. Artwork by artist Lucía Laurent created in the technique Acrylic on high-quality professional canvas. The piece is characterized by an intense and saturated color palette, with a predominance of scarlet reds, golden yellows, and a deep cobalt blue, all defined by black and precise contour lines. The subject, a woman with black hair and rosy skin, looks at us with a direct and enigmatic gaze, partially hidden behind a large wide-brimmed hat that combines ivory white with a bright yellow lining. The floral element is central and enveloping, with gigantic red tulips, one of which reveals pink inner petals that frame the figure and create a dynamic foreground. This interaction between the human form and the stylized nature is complemented by black-and-white geometric patterns at the base, adding a touch of optical dynamism and modernity to the composition. The acrylic technique applied smoothly in flat layers, along with attention to linear details, gives the work a decorative quality and a unique visual sophistication.
