Louise-Geneviève de Gomez de Vasconcelle - L’Arioste...

This magnificent classic work of late 17th-century literature and epic poetry is a remarkable edition tied to the work of Ariosto: THE ARIOSTE MODERNE Volume I. Paris, At Jean Guignard, Bookseller (with the king's privilege granted in October 1684). A volume in small-12mo bound in original red morocco, the spine with raised bands ornamented with gold compartments and spurs, with a red title-piece bearing “L'ARIOSTE MODERNE” and a volume designation. The boards are framed by a double gold fillet with floral cornerpieces, and the interior features superb marbled flyleaves with multicolored swirling motifs. Fresh interior. Missing the title page. The work opens with a text framed by splendid banners and ornate initials, developing epic tales inspired by knights, paladins, Charlemagne, as well as fantastical adventures (such as the island of Alcine or the spells of enchanters), and ends with the excerpt of the king's privilege signed by Junquieres and recorded by the syndic C. Angot in December 1684. L’arioSTE Moderne sits in the lineage of adaptations and continuations inspired by the famous Orlando Furioso (Orlando Furioso) by Ludovico Ariosto, great classics of Renaissance chivalric poetry that captivated the French public in the classical era with its intrigues mixing love, war, and the marvelous. Superb copy.
