Lot of (2) 1959 Heraldic Art Medal So-Called Half Dollars. St. Lawrence Seaway. Gem Mint State. 30.6 mm, each. Included are: gold, serial no. 15, 18.50 grams, 22 karat; and sterling silver, serial no. 5002. Both accompanied by the original serial numbered envelopes. From the first four years of this intriguing series made by Bob McNamara of Heraldic Art Medals. McNamara sought to create a continuation of the United States commemorative half dollar series and produced medallions equivalent in diameter but varying from their counterparts in metallic composition, thickness, and purity. These "so called half dollars" were struck on a 1940s vintage converted hydraulic press which he purchased from Germany. There were sixty regular issue medallions released over 20 years. They were issued three per year. The initial price for sterling silver examples was $2.95 each; this changed to $3.25 in 1960, $3.50 in 1963, $3.95 in 1968, $4.25 in 1973, $5.50 in 1974, and $6.25 in 1978. All are beautifully designed and rather scarce. (Total: 2 medals; 2 envelopes)
