lobaki - Congo river

A truly exceptional find for collectors of African art and unique vintage decor: an authentic 1970s/1980s Congolese popular art painting with an incredible story. This vibrant, textured painting depicts a serene, atmospheric Congolese river landscape (likely the Congo River). It features a large, majestic tree overlooking calm waters with local pirogues (canoes) and figures dressed in colorful traditional clothing. The piece is beautifully hand-painted with expressive, thick brush and palette knife strokes. It is signed in the lower right corner by the local artist, Lobaki. The Fascinating Secret on the Back: What makes this artwork an incredible conversation piece is its canvas. Due to a severe shortage of professional art supplies in mid-to-late 20th-century Congo, resourceful local academy and street artists repurposed used linen flour sacks. When you turn the frame around, you can see the original bold blue industrial stamps from the mill: "MINOTERIE DE MATADI" and "FARINE DE FROMENT" (Wheat Flour from the port city of Matadi, DRC). This provides absolute proof of its cultural authenticity and historical origin. The painting is housed in a substantial, robust original mid-century wooden frame that perfectly enhances its rustic, vintage charm. Key Features: • Artist: Signed "Lobaki" in the lower right corner. • Period: Circa 1970s–1980s. • Origin: Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire), Matadi region. • Medium: Oil or acrylic on a repurposed linen industrial flour sack (Minoterie de Matadi). • Condition: Excellent vintage condition. The paint is thick, stable, and well-preserved. The original wooden frame is sturdy and shows authentic, light signs of age. Perfect for: Collectors of authentic African tribal and popular art, lovers of mid-century global decor, or anyone looking for a statement piece with a rich historical background.
