LÉON BERNARDEL (1853–1931) — French violin A 4/4 violin bearing a printed label on the inside reading “Léon Bernardel, Luthier à Paris,” adorned with the workshop’s monogram. Top made of spruce with a regular grain; back made of two pieces of heavily figured maple; sides and neck made of maple. Three-strand purfling. Reddish-brown varnish with amber hues. Ebony fingerboard and pegs. Back length: 35.8 cm. France, Paris, late 19th–early 20th century. Signs of wear, scratches, and damage to the varnish; the instrument requires restoration and reassembly. Note: The label corresponds to a known type made by Léon Bernardel. However, definitive attribution of the instrument to Léon Bernardel would require examination by an expert in French violin making.
