LEGRAS (1839-1916) - Vase - Sublime Large Vase 'Calypso'...

Circa 1900 – Cristallerie Legras & Cie, Saint-Denis, France. Splendid and majestic large LEGRAS vase in blown glass, of the elegant Calypso shape, remarkable for its slender silhouette and its magnificent hot-enameled decoration, entirely hand-painted, depicting a peaceful snowy forest bathed in the last golden glimmers of a setting sun. What immediately catches the eye is the extraordinary harmony of colors and the poetry emanating from this wintry landscape. On a sumptuous golden-ochre, amber and orange background, seeming to capture all the warmth of a twilight sky, stand out the majestic silhouettes of great trees stripped of their leaves. Their tall trunks rise gracefully along the full height of the vase, while their fine naked branches are delicately outlined in the warm light of the sky. At their feet, the forest seems to have fallen asleep under a thick coat of snow. A remarkable white enamel work, generously applied in relief, covers the foot of the vase, evoking with great realism the accumulation of fresh snow at the bases of the trees and on the woodland’s reliefs. The delicate brown and golden hues of the vegetation, the fine silhouettes of the trees, and the almost luminous whiteness of the snow compose a landscape of great depth, where the last rays of the sun seem to still warm the forest before nightfall. All the charm of this magnificent glassware lies in this striking contrast between the blazing warmth of the sky and the frozen silence of the sleeping forest. The decoration unfolds harmoniously on the different faces of the vase, revealing, as you turn it, new trees and new perspectives, like a true stroll through a wintry forest. Its elegant Calypso shape, with its long slender body, delicately flared neck and wide squared base, further enhances this vertical impression, giving the trees their full majesty. This work wonderfully evokes the forest landscapes of François-Théodore Legras’s native Vosges, that lover of nature who so admirably translated on glass the beauty of the seasons and the changing atmospheres of the forest. More than a simple vase, it is a genuine impressionist painting on glass, an invitation to contemplation, where one could almost hear the silence of the snow and feel the last rays of the sun disappear behind the trees. A very fine illustration of the talent of Legras’s enamel painters, whose landscape creations rank among the most poetic testimonies of French Art Nouveau glassware. Signed “Legras” in the decoration, at the base of the vase in the snow Magnificent collectible piece from the Art Nouveau period, whose particularly elongated proportions, warm and luminous colors and superb wintry decor give it exceptional decorative presence. Beautiful height of about 35.5 cm with a generous volume. In very nice condition for its great age, with its magnificent colors still as warm and bright. Note only a few discreet small signs of wear at the neck, quite normal and coherent with the time passed, for this vase created around 1900, now over 125 years old! These discreet marks of time do not detract in any way from the charm and beauty of this magnificent Legras-signed Art Nouveau glassware, which has endured over a century while preserving its poetry and elegance. Below the base is a pretty trace of the pontil from the blowing rod, snapped off with tongs, a touching testament to the old manufacturing techniques and the remarkable artisanal know-how of the Saint-Denis glassmakers. Very fine piece of collection from the Art Nouveau period of the Nancy school. Daum Nancy, Gallé, French Glass, Schneider, Lalique... Magnificent vase that is sure to attract attention and bring to your interior all the poetry and elegance of the great art glassworks of the early 20th century. DUE TO A GROWING NUMBER OF UNPAID LOTS... PLEASE DO NOT BID IF YOU ARE NOT 100% CERTAIN OF YOUR PURCHASE! THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR UNDERSTANDING.
