Circa 1900. Cristallerie Legras & Cie in St Denis, France. Magnificent rare large Legras jardinière vase in blown glass, remarkable for its elegant oblong shape and, above all, for its superb hand-painted and hand-glazed decoration depicting two majestic swans gliding peacefully on a lake, at the heart of a wonderful landscape with delicate polychrome tones. Set against a luminous yellow-orange opacified background, this superb composition, delicately painted and enameled by heating, invites us into the calm of a landscape at sunset, where a pair of white swans glide calmly on the water, one proudly straightening its long neck while the other dips gently toward the surface. All around them unfolds abundant vegetation: reeds, aquatic plants and water lilies border the lake’s calm waters, while a majestic tree extends its foliage above the scene. On the horizon, distant hills arise under a sky delicately shaded in yellow and orange, further enhancing the depth and gentleness of this enchanting landscape. The decor, imagined as a true panoramic painting, reveals itself gradually as you turn the piece. The details of the swans’ plumage, the ripples on the water, the reeds, the foliage and the reflections of the setting sun attest to remarkable painting and glazing work. The generous, elongated shape of this 25 cm long jardinière lends itself perfectly to this composition: the landscape seems to unfold around the glass, giving the piece a true pictorial dimension. This charming swan scene along a lakeside belongs fully to François-Théodore Legras’s naturalistic repertoire at the beginning of the 20th century. A vase with an extremely close decor, also depicting swans swimming near a lake shore, is reproduced in documentation dedicated to Legras & Cie and dated around 1905 in the famous and rare scholarly directory, the great Dictionary of Glass Masters, which gathers and classifies the finest vases from the Art Nouveau to the Art Deco period. A superb collectible piece full of charm, a true glass painting where light, enamel and nature meet to reproduce the silent poetry of a pair of swans gliding peacefully on a lake at sunset. In good condition for its great age, with well-preserved enamel, thick and fresh, and warm and vivid colors despite its age of over 120 years! Note the presence of a small ancient flaw, non-penetrating, under the base angle (slightly accentuated by light and difficult to photograph) which remains very discreet since it is under the vase. It may result from a minor ancient impact or possibly from the vase’s production, this type of small manufacturing defect, sometimes called a “fêle de cuisson” (firing flaw), can occur on old glassware during the delicate blowing process. This minor defect remains almost invisible once this magnificent vase is placed and does not alter its solidity or the very handsome decorative effect, nor the charm of this elegant Legras vase over a century old.
