Lecompton, Territory of Kansas. State Bank. 1856 $5. PMG Choice Very

Lecompton, Territory of Kansas. State Bank. 1856 $5. PMG Choice Very Fine 35. Remainder. No. None. Plate A. From a beautiful Ormsby series using intricate face counters and a full orange "target" back anchored by a quintet of portraits depicting George Washington. This very note is attributable to a bank that was planned, but never opened likely owing to the sectarian divides that echoed across Kansas during the 1850s. The State Bank was set to serve Lecompton which was epicenter of pro-slavery settlement in Kansas during the "Bleeding Kansas" struggle that marred Kansas during its Territorial period. This particular specimen shows signs of handling consistent with moderate circulation and bears testament to hand cut margins. Per Steven Whitfield's reference Kansas Obsolete Notes and Scrip this denomination is listed as an R-7 rarity and is seldom ever traded. PMG comments "Stains." Estimate: $400 - $600. Provenance: From the Caine Collection.
