A bourgeois living room completely submerged. The parquet floor, the dresser, the golden méridienne, the frames on the wall, the small-paned window, the curtains — everything is in place, and everything is under water. In the center, a young woman in a red dress stands barefoot, holding her skirt outstretched with one arm. From the ceiling, two schools of fish cross: red on the left, gold on the right. This is not a drowning, it’s an invitation. At Aloysius Bertrand, Ondine invites the sleeper to come rule over her palace at the bottom of the lake; here the palace is a XIXth-century interior and the dance has already begun. The red of the dress, the only warm mass in the canvas, stands up to all the blue — it’s this point of tension that prevents the scene from tipping into a soft dream. The water is built from overlapping blue sails, enhanced by dry whites for the bubbles and the beams of light; the dress is the tour de force, gathered in thick pleats where the red shifts from carmine to garnet in the hollows; the furniture, darker and smoother, acts as ballast to the composition and anchors the bottom of the painting. (The interior visualization is an AI render provided for reference.) Characteristics of the work: Signature: Hand-signed by the artist on the front and back of the artwork.
