Lawrence, Kansas. Lawrence Bank. 18xx $1. PMG Choice Fine 15 Net. Repaired. Remainder. No. None. Plate A. Evidence of prolonged technical circulation consistent with the grade assigned may be observed. The Lawrence Bank was nonetheless a legitimate institution that received its charter after "Free State" advocates gained control of the Territorial Legislature in 1857. Notes issued by the Lawrence Bank first entered circulation in the early 1860s shortly before statehood. Issued pieces on this institution all carry dates that postdate statehood and by 1862 the bank fell into voluntary liquidation owing to impeachment efforts against Governor Charles Robinson who was a principal stockholder in the bank. Today notes attributable to this short-lived venture are rare and well-made even by the standards of the period with design elements that stood at the forefront of period anti-counterfeiting methods. PMG comments "Repaired." Estimate: $600 - $800. Provenance: From the Caine Collection. Click here for certification details from PMG.
