LAVATER (Jean-Gaspard). Essay on Physiognomy, Intended to Help People Understand and Love One Another. Printed in The Hague, n.p. [Jacques Van Karnebeek], [1781]-1783-1786-1803. 4 volumes in-4, tortoiseshell calfskin, triple gilt fillet, decorated spine, title, author, and volume number labels, oval and flattened mosaic compartments in the panels, interior roulette, gilt edges (contemporary binding). First edition of the French translation, illustrated with 193 plates and over 450 figures in the text, all depicting portrait types and black-and-white silhouettes. Physiognomy is the study of an individual’s temperament and character based on the shape, features, and expressions of their face: Lavater’s (1741–1801) work, originally published in German in 1775–1778, remains the most famous treatise of its kind. A copy on large-format paper in a highly decorative contemporary binding. Engraved ex-libris bearing the coat of arms of Sir James Carnegie of Southesk, Bart. Light foxing. Scuffing on the binding; one jaw split and others fragile.
