Oil lamp with a foliage frieze motif and a geometric motif at the center. Material: terra cotta, pottery Culture: period 4th-6th century BCE Dimensions: length 12 cm, width 7 cm, height 4 cm including the handle. Excellent condition. Provenance: private family collection dating from 1970. The entire collection was examined in 2022 by Ms. Monique BEYROUTHI, archaeology expert. An oil lamp from ancient Rome was a common object, essential in ancient Rome used for illumination. These lamps were primarily made of terracotta. Oil was poured in and a wick protruded, serving as fuel. Lamps varied often; they indicated the owner's social status, beliefs, and bore numerous drawings: animals, floral motifs, figures (Gods, Goddesses)... Lamps were widespread throughout the Roman Empire and are often found in tombs.
