Ca. 20th century AD > A large Papua New Guinea wooden bowl of elongated oval form, with a deep well, tapered ends and a raised rim. Carved details accent the exterior near the ends. Tami Islands carvers made hardwood bowls both for local use and for regional exchange. Fine bowls served at ceremonial feasts and were important components of bridewealth gifts. Their craftsmanship thus linked the preparation and sharing of food with marriage, prestige and relationships between communities. > > Size: 720mm x 165mm; Weight: 2.84kg > Provenance: Private London Collection; Ex.
