Large Orthoceras Fossil Slab - Fossil matrix - Orthoceras sp. - 54 cm - 38 cm

Large Orthoceras Fossil Slab – Polished Orthoconic Nautiloids with Metal Display Stand – Morocco An impressive large fossil slab from Morocco, featuring a remarkable concentration of elongated orthoconic nautiloid fossils, traditionally known as "Orthoceras". Its striking composition and beautifully polished surface make it a fascinating example of prehistoric marine life and a distinctive natural decorative piece. The slab displays numerous long, tapered fossil shells arranged in a dynamic, almost vertical composition. Their sleek, pointed shapes create an extraordinary three-dimensional effect, with polished black surfaces contrasting beautifully against the lighter grey and silver-toned fossiliferous limestone. Several specimens reveal exceptionally clear internal chamber divisions, visible as delicate, regularly spaced pale lines running along the length of the shells. These intricate structures offer a fascinating glimpse into the anatomy of ancient marine cephalopods. Particularly attractive is the sculptural relief of the fossil arrangement. The elongated shells appear to emerge from the surrounding matrix, creating alternating areas of light, shadow, and glossy reflections. The polished finish enhances the deep black coloration, while the naturally irregular outer edges preserve the authentic character of the limestone. The reverse side retains a more natural, matte appearance, with subtle fossil impressions and sedimentary textures that contrast with the highly polished front. Orthoconic nautiloids inhabited Paleozoic oceans hundreds of millions of years ago. Their distinctive straight, chambered shells are an important part of the fossil record and are appreciated for both their paleontological significance and elegant geometric appearance. The slab is supplied with the sturdy metal display stand shown in the photographs, allowing it to be presented upright as an impressive natural history display. Origin: Morocco Fossil Type: Orthoconic Nautiloid ("Orthoceras") Presentation: Large polished fossil slab with metal display stand A substantial and visually striking fossil composition, combining numerous beautifully preserved marine fossils with refined natural aesthetics. An outstanding display piece for fossil collections, sophisticated interiors, or a carefully curated cabinet of curiosities.
