IMPORTANT FRAGMENT OF RAJPUT-MUGHAL WALL PAINTING Western Rajasthan, probably the Nagaur / Marwar region, India 18th century, circa 1730–1780 Important fragment of wall painting on a thick mineral coating, lime-based and marble powder, presenting a register-based composition. The upper register shows a series of court figures depicted in profile, under architecture with columns. The figures, wearing turbans and adorned with aristocratic costumes, are treated with a black linear drawing that is particularly characteristic of the Rajput-Mughal vocabulary. The lower register depicts several armed figures with long spear-like staffs, in a hunting scene for elephants. The deliberately restrained palette — deep reds, earth tones, black, white and blue — as well as the graphic treatment of faces and costumes are especially evocative of wall painting from the western Rajasthan principalities in the 18th century. The support preserves a thick stratigraphy of traditional lime-based plaster. The very smooth and shiny finish in certain areas reveals the Rajasthani techniques of the “ala-gila / arayish” type, notably involving lime materials and marble powder. Dimensions: 54 × 42 cm Weight: more than 11 kg without the base Condition: detached fragment, with losses, wear, and peripheral cracks; significant conservation of the pictorial material. The piece will be sent with its base.
