Large Chinese Carved Wood & Lacquer Figure of a Luohan on Burl Wood Base

Modeled as a standing Buddhist arhat with a bald head, pronounced facial features, elongated earlobes, mustache and beard, wearing layered robes with incised and carved floral borders. The figure is depicted with exposed chest and abdomen, a strand of large prayer beads draped over the shoulder and held across the body, one hand raised in a gesture and the other lowered across the beads. Finished in red, brown, black, and gilt lacquer with traces of gilding throughout, the figure stands on a separately carved naturalistic burl wood base incorporating root and rock-like formations.
