East Asia, China, late Qing dynasty to Republic period, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A large Chinese archaistic bi disc carved from dense gray stone, modeled after ancient ritual jades. The disc has a central aperture and is finished on both faces with an evenly spaced cross-hatched lattice pattern, recalling Neolithic and Han dynasty prototypes. Archaistic stone carvings of this type were produced during the late Qing and early Republic periods as scholarly objects, display pieces, or architectural and interior elements. Size: 9.9" Diameter (25.1 cm) Well-proportioned and visually balanced, this bi disc exemplifies the continued cultural value of ancient forms reinterpreted through later craftsmanship and historical awareness.
