Large Art Deco Ring With Starlit Zircon & Diamonds in Silver & Gold, Circa 1935

Zircon is a gemstone that is unjustly little known in Germany. It has nothing in common with the cheap "zirconia", which is produced in the laboratory and is a cheap diamond substitute. Genuine zircons are precious gemstones that can come in many vivid colours. Blue precious zircons carry the trade name "starlite" and are created by carefully burning the dark brown stones found, which almost look like hard coal in their raw state, at temperatures around 1,000 degrees Celsius wrapped in clay for several hours. With a bit of luck, this produces the unmistakable blue that is one of the most sought-after colours in the spectrum of precious zircons. In this way, an initially inconspicuous material is transformed into a luminous gemstone whose strikingly high light refraction is close to that of diamonds. The icy colour of blue zircons first made them sought-after gemstones in Art Deco jewellery. The cool elegance of the graphic designs of the time, the precious metals used in white were excellent companions for this unusual stone. The present ring also comes from this period. It presents a star cut zircon in its center, whose countless facets highlight the brilliance of the stone. Held in a bezel setting, surrounded by a shadow gap and flanked by diamonds in elegantly pierced silver, the glacier blue gemstone is perfectly showcased. The cuts of the gemstones, the choice of setting and the design allow us to date this ring to around 1935. According to its hallmarks, it was probably made in Germany.
