Hanspeter Landolt examines the various artistic centers of the Germanic world and their development, notably Bohemia, the Upper Rhine, and the Swabian and Swiss regions. The book reproduces and analyzes numerous major works, including those by Konrad Witz, the Master of the Garden of Paradise, and the Bohemian masters. The study particularly highlights the interplay between courtly art, the international Gothic tradition, and the gradual development of a new realism in the 15th century.
