[EINSTEIN, Albert]. Custom lamp, decorated with text from Einstein's Field Equations for his Theory of General Relativity, and plaque facsimile T.L.S. from Einstein to William L. Laurence, 19 March 1953. "I compared myself with our venerated Moses. There was the tablet of the Law and the light radiating form it." Affixed to this lamp is a plaque reproducing an otherwise unpublished letter from Einstein to Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times science writer William L. Laurence. Einstein thanks Laurence for a gift and makes a striking comparison between himself and Moses, quoted above. He continues, "There is more analogy: Moses' laws were not obeyed and my laws are not believed". Laurence, of Russian-Jewish heritage, reported early in 1940 on successful isolation of uranium-235 and the future of nuclear power. He was appointed by Leslie Groves as official historian of the Manhattan Project. He was consequently the only journalist to witness the Trinity test and the bombing of Nagasaki. Wooden desk lamp (5 x 3 x 13 in), one side with photo reproduction of Einstein letter on brass plaque (3 3⁄4 x 4 ½ in), two other sides with four components of Einstein's field equations for his Theory of General Relativity in brass, topped by a two-bulb lamp fixture in brass, with buff lampshade.
