This object is an electrified Neoclassical (or Empire style) table lamp, whose structure and aesthetic conception have roots in the second half of the 19th century or the first half of the 20th century. It originated as a candelabrum or torchère. The slender, turned central shaft, made of patinated bronze or brass, was originally conceived as an ornamental candlestick or candle holder. The square base rests on a block of precious marble (reminiscent of Verona red marble or brecciated marble), a typical choice of European artisanal workshops (especially Italian and French) to give stability and a luxurious tone to the piece. The ornamental details near the base display classical relief decorations, such as acanthus leaves or small medallions, typical symbols of Neoclassicism. Toward the late 19th and into the first half of the 20th century, with electricity spreading in patrimonial and bourgeois homes, many of these historical candelabras were converted and wired to accommodate a light bulb. This modification, visible from the electrical wire and the vintage switch at the base, allowed a candle-lit object to be transformed into a functional modern furnishing accessory. The lamp is crowned by a splendid shade (or a shaped shade) in V-folded pleated fabric, trimmed with a braided edge. This specific design of a “moving fan” was conceived to be placed close to a wall or above a console in a hallway: its flat back reduces bulk, while the pleated fabric distributes a soft, warm ambient light, shielding the bulb and enhancing the metallic reflections of the bronze beneath.
