Important and uncommon English centerpiece in sterling silver 925, made by Lambert & Co. (Herbert Charles Lambert), London, 1902. A large example from the Edwardian era, weighing an exceptional 1,440 grams and measuring approximately 30 × 30 × 14 cm. The body, richly repoussé and chased, features floral motifs, elegant scroll-form handles, four spherical feet, and a refined interior Oriental-inspired decoration with dragons. The hallmarks are clearly legible: HL mark of Herbert Charles Lambert, the lion passant for Sterling silver, London Leopard’s head, and the letter “g” for 1902. The Herbert Charles Lambert mark was registered precisely in 1902, making this piece an interesting example from the early years of his production. Of particular significance is the original inscription “The King’s Birthday 1902,” accompanied by the initials G.C.T.B. and M.C.B., which gives the centerpiece notable historical and collecting interest. Historical research shows a suggestive match of the initials with Sir George Christopher Trout Bartley and his wife Mary Charlotte Bartley. George Christopher Trout Bartley was named Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB) in the Birthday Honours of Edward VII in 1902. This connection is very interesting but, in the absence of provenance documentation, is indicated as a possible attribution rather than proven provenance.
