Laferia, Texas. $50 1929 Ty. 1. Fr. 1803-1. First NB. Charter #12747. PCGS Banknote Choice Very Fine 35. A rarity from Cameron County in South Texas. The First National Bank of Laferia (Charter# 12747) had the distinction of only issuing T1 $50s and T2 $20s, but also represents a charter where a spelling error inadvertently surfaced in which the city's name is spelled "Laferia" contrary to the correct spelling "La Feria" which is recognized as correct even though both spellings mean the same thing translating to "the fair" in Spanish. Spelling aside, this is a scarce institution for Nationals with just 14 non-institutional pieces recorded here by the National Bank Note Census. The rarity of these notes are further complicated by the relative popularity of $50s and $100s issued under the Series of 1929. These notes are often collected by collectors whose interests go beyond a specific state or local area making this a fairly rare opportunity at least when offered in a public context and one not to be missed if you specialize in Nationals from the three southernmost counties in Texas. PCGS Banknote comments "Partial Ink Stamp, Closed Pinholes, Partially Removed Wax Pencil." Estimate: $1,250 - $1,750. Provenance: From the Jack Copeland Currency Collection, Part IV.
