λ PAUL LUCIEN MAZE (FRENCH/BRITISH 1887-1979) OBAN, SCOTLAND Watercolour over touches of charcoal Signed, dated 1920 and inscribed Oban (lower left) 46.5 x 59cm (18¼ x 23in.) Maze had promised to visit the wife of his friend Captain Thomas Nelson, if he were to be killed in battle during the war. He kept his promise and travelled to Scotland to see her. Following a prolonged visit to Paris they became close friends and married in 1920. Paul then moved to her estate at Achnacloich, Scotland with her six children. Margaret and Paul would go on to have a daughter and a son, Pauline and Etienne in 1920 and 1922.
