Kuba Schirwan - Carpet - 220 cm - 129 cm - Possibly Armenia Inscribe

Description: Charming antique Caucasian Shirwan rug, probably Armenian-inscribed. Hand-knotted in wool, finely detailed geometric composition. The field is articulated by a sequence of striking geometric medallions, surrounded by numerous stylised floral and abstract motifs. The rich palette combines deep madder red, indigo blue, ivory, ochre, brown and muted green tones. The intricate borders display traditional Caucasian geometric ornamentation and repeated floral elements. Several motifs appear to incorporate cross-like and highly stylised symbolic forms, characteristic of some Armenian-associated Caucasian weaving traditions. The upper section appears to possibly contain a woven date, although the exact reading remains uncertain.
