Koie Ryoji (Japanese, 1938-2020), Chawan | Tea Bowl, 2008

Koie Ryoji (Japanese, 1938-2020), Chawan | Tea Bowl, 2008

Stoneware, orange and grey glazes, incised maker's mark, signed wooden box H 6.1cm, D 14.2cm PROVENANCE: Private Collection, London REFERENCE: The signed wooden box is inscribed inside the lid 'St Johns', indicating that this is a work made by Koie whilst a resident potter at Saint John's University in Minnesota. These works were made using local clay and fired at the Johanna Kiln at Saint John's University, the largest wood-burning kiln of its kind in North America, fired only once every few years. This tea bowl bears the hallmarks of other works from this group, with its undulating edge, soft surface and gradated colouring producing a vessel that looks like a rock or stone that has been pulled from the natural world. CONDITION: Perfect condition with no damage or restoratio ceramics
