Kirtland, Ohio. Kirtland Safety Society Bank. 1837 $5. PMG Very Fine 30. No. 1642. Plate A. A mid-grade note in technical terms and visually similar to countless Obsoletes issued by a litany of banks during the 1830s. This piece from Ohio does well to not only represent a desirable institution tied to the early history of the LDS movement long before the Church made its way to Utah in the 1840s, but also an attractive sight that does well to emphasize this piece as a financial instrument that should not have survived under normal circumstances. Even more remarkable though is the fact that this piece has not sustained any impairments that would warrant a comment from PMG. To that end, bidders and viewers may observe a number of honest folds consistent with the assigned grade along with the penned secretarial signatures of Joseph Smith and Sidney Rigdon which should no doubt appeal to the collector looking to acquire a note issued by Kirtland Safety Society burdened with an uncommon degree of eye appeal. Estimate: $4,000 - $6,000. Provenance: From the Caine Collection. Click here for certification details from PMG.
