Kimbei Kusakabe, two vintage albumen prints enhanced with watercolor, circa 1885 : 1. Railway Iron Bridge at Nagara River Aichiken, was broken by earthquake Documentary photograph rare depicting a railroad iron bridge collapsed following an earthquake in Japan. This striking image illustrates the vulnerability of modern infrastructure to natural disasters at the end of the 19th century. 2. Work Men's Holiday Animated genre scene showing a group of Japanese workers sharing a moment of relaxation and sociability. One of them plays the shamisen while the others enjoy a traditional meal, in a lively ambiance typically Japanese. Kusakabe Kimbei (1841-1934) was a colorist and assistant of Felice Beato and Baron Raimond von Stillfried before opening his own workshop in Yokohama in 1881. Circa 1885, he repurchased the negatives of Beato and Stillfried. Kimbei immortalizes, at the end of the 19th century, many scenes of Japanese life. The prints, which he hand-colors, are then sold to Western travelers passing through Japan. Condition: Prints mounted on cardboard, recto-verso. See photos for more details. Number of pages: 2 pages Very careful shipping in a rigid and watertight carton. #japanweek
