About the print Fugaku hyakkei is a picture book in three volumes that Hokusai designed in his seventies, after the success of his print series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. He signed it "Gakyō Rōjin Manji", the "old man mad about painting". The first two volumes were published in 1834 and 1835 by Nishimuraya Yohachi, who had also issued the Thirty-six Views. The third volume followed some years later from Eirakuya Tōshirō of Nagoya, the publisher of the Hokusai Manga. The book contains 102 designs, each showing Mount Fuji in a different setting, from everyday scenes to legends and myth. For Hokusai, Fuji was more than a landscape. It was linked to the idea of immortality, which mattered to an artist who hoped to live past a hundred. The scholar Jack Hillier called the One Hundred Views Hokusai's masterwork.
