1998, white porcelain and paint, no. 8 of 16, 14.5cm wide, 25cm deep, 20cm high, Matthew Marks Gallery, New York; White Cube, London; a private collection. Katharina Fritsch was born in 1956 in Essen, Germany and was previously a Professor of Sculpture at Kunstakademie, Düsseldorf. Her sculptures and installations often use familiar objects in a way that creates a jarring and uncanny effect. In this respect, she has been likened to Marcel Duchamp. Fritsch's work is inspired by subjects including Christianity, art history and folklore. Noted works include 'Rattenkönig' (Rat King), a giant circle of black polyester rats, included in the Venice Biennale in 1999, and 'Hahn' (Cock), a 4.7 metre high bright blue cockerel displayed on London's Trafalgar Square Fourth Plinth from July 2013 to February 2015.
