Overall width including the spiral binding: approximately 31.6 cm. Karl Lagerfeld’s signature, as well as Maison Lesage atelier markings and labels. Both objects are offered exclusively as a single collectible set and are not sold separately. Personal History and Provenance The offered objects come from my private collection, which I have been assembling since 1992. This particular sketch and atelier portfolio were received by me in 2019 as part of a small collection of fashion sketches given to me as a gift by Karl Lagerfeld. For me, these objects are more than just a reminder of an outstanding fashion designer. They are connected with the years of my collaboration with Karl Lagerfeld and Maison Lesage, a time when Haute Couture ideas were brought to life through close interaction between the designer and skilled artisans working by hand. I grew up in a family of hereditary gold embroiderers, masters of traditional ecclesiastical gold and silver embroidery. In 2004, during my studies at École Lesage in Paris, I met Karl Lagerfeld for the first time. From 2007 until his death in 2019, I collaborated with Karl Lagerfeld, Maison Lesage, and other ateliers that had carried out exclusive handcrafted artistic work for the House of CHANEL for decades. My work included creating embroidery samples, developing new techniques of artistic embroidery and appliqué, and bringing the designer’s artistic ideas to life in material form. After Karl Lagerfeld’s death, the French lawyer Jacques Cholet contacted me and informed me that the designer had left me a small collection of his fashion sketches as a gift. This news came as a completely unexpected and incredibly touching surprise. Karl Lagerfeld always treated the people he worked with with great attention and care. He understood that after his passing, many of us would have to look for new jobs or end their professional careers and retire. Therefore, during his lifetime, he sought to take care of many of his employees by preparing personal gifts for them. I regard the collection I received as one expression of his personal consideration, gratitude, and recognition of the work of those who had helped bring his creative visions to life over many years. On 5 April 2019, I received the collection together with its accompanying Acte de donation — a deed of gift which, according to the collection’s provenance history, was personally drafted, handwritten, and signed by Karl Lagerfeld on 9 November 2018. Accompanying Provenance Documentation The offered set will be transferred together with its associated provenance documentation. The buyer will receive a photographic reproduction of the handwritten Acte de donation dated 9 November 2018, as well as the accompanying documents relating to the offered set. This deed of gift is of independent historical and collectible interest. Since the entire text of the document, according to its provenance history, was written in Karl Lagerfeld’s own hand, it represents a valuable example of his handwritten legacy and makes it possible to study the individual characteristics of the designer’s handwriting, rather than only his signature. The document exists as a single original and relates to the entire collection, comprising several dozen sketches. The original deed of gift remains in the collection’s archive and is not included in the offered set. The buyer will be provided with a photographic reproduction, allowing them to examine the document’s contents and the characteristics of the handwritten text. Significance of the Set within My Collection Karl Lagerfeld highly valued the precision of handwork, craftsmanship, and the ability to transform the most unusual artistic ideas into works of textile art. The connection between the fashion sketch and the Maison Lesage atelier portfolio makes this set a particularly special reminder for me of the collaboration between the world of fashion design and the art of embroidery. For health reasons, I have decided to part with selected objects from my private collection. I hope that this set will find a new home in the collection of a collector or Haute Couture enthusiast who will appreciate its history and its connection to the world of CHANEL and Maison Lesage. Condition, Documentation, Packaging and Shipping Before shipping, both objects will be carefully examined to verify their condition, individual characteristics, and the completeness of the accompanying documentation. The inspection, photographic and video documentation of the objects’ condition, and packaging will take place in the presence of several witnesses. Following the inspection, a written Condition and Packaging Report (Zustands- und Verpackungsprotokoll) will be prepared and signed by the seller and the witnesses present. Packaging will be carried out with due regard for the special requirements involved in transporting original works of art on paper and historical atelier materials. Shipping will be carried out with tracking and appropriate insurance coverage, where available for the selected destination and the value of the artwork. Please read the description carefully and examine the photographs of both objects. If you have any questions regarding the set, its condition, or the accompanying documents, please ask them before the auction ends through the Catawiki messaging system. I will be happy to provide any necessary clarification. Terms of Private Sale, Returns and Complaints 1. Private Sale The sale is conducted by a private individual from their own collection. No voluntary right of return or exchange is offered. The buyer’s mandatory rights under applicable law and Catawiki’s rules remain unaffected. 2. Return of the Complete Set In the event of cancellation of the sales contract, the seller categorically insists on the return of the complete set, consisting of the original Karl Lagerfeld fashion sketch, the Maison Lesage atelier portfolio, and all accompanying documentation provided. This requirement also applies in cases where claims are raised regarding the authenticity or originality of the objects, except where the return would conflict with mandatory legal provisions or lawful orders issued by competent governmental authorities. 3. Verification of Authenticity and Identity of the Objects In the event of claims concerning the authenticity or originality of the objects, the seller requires a reasoned expert report containing detailed identification of the objects examined. Any authenticity examination must be conducted with proper documentation of its findings. The seller reserves the right to challenge the conclusions of an expert examination and to request verification that the objects examined are identical to those originally delivered to the buyer. Any examination, transfer of the objects to third parties, or return must be accompanied by proper documentation of their condition, individual characteristics, and history of movement. In the event of a return, the seller reserves the right to verify the identity and condition of the returned objects by comparing them with the photographs, video recordings, and inspection report prepared before the original shipment. 4. Shipping, Insurance and Return Costs In the event of an agreed return for reasons unrelated to any breach of the seller’s obligations, the costs of the original shipment, insurance, and return shipping will be taken into account when settling the transaction, to the extent permitted by law and Catawiki’s rules. The seller reserves the right to claim reimbursement of documented expenses arising through the buyer’s fault, where an appropriate legal basis exists. The return shipment of both objects in the set must be carried out using appropriate protective packaging, tracking, and insurance coverage corresponding to the value of the artworks, where such services are available. The allocation of costs and the return procedure will be agreed upon through Catawiki, with due regard for the mandatory rights of both parties. 5. Handling of Complaints The buyer is advised to report visible damage, discrepancies in condition, or missing items through Catawiki within three calendar days after confirmed delivery, in accordance with the platform’s procedure. If damage is discovered, the buyer is advised to retain the original packaging and provide photographs of the objects, packaging, and shipping label. The expiry of this period does not invalidate the buyer’s mandatory rights under applicable law. All matters relating to returns, authenticity verification, and dispute resolution will be handled through Catawiki in accordance with the platform’s applicable rules and with respect for the rights of both parties.
