Royal Copenhagen Christmas and Anniversary Plates Collection with Anniversary Plate 1. Brief assessment and sales relevance The presented lot is a decoratively closed collection of Royal Copenhagen Christmas/annual plates of Danish porcelain, supplemented by a larger anniversary plate. The regular plates display the series' characteristic cobalt blue underglaze decoration with relief and winter or Christmas motifs. Dimensions: Anniversary plate diameter approx. 18 cm Jubilee plate diameter approx. 24.4 cm 2. Manufacturer and cultural-historical background Royal Copenhagen traces its origins to the Royal Danish Porcelain Manufactory, founded in 1775 in Copenhagen. The well-known factory mark combines a crown with three wavy lines. The idea of an annually recurring collectible plate developed in the late 19th century; Royal Copenhagen introduced its first Christmas plate in 1908. The annually changing motifs connect Danish landscapes, architecture, everyday life, animals, and Christmas tradition. Royal Copenhagen describes the series itself as part of its ongoing “Blue Collectibles” tradition. The manufacturing concept is based on a relief model: indentations and elevations of the relief create different depths of color in the cobalt blue underglaze, producing the typical monochrome, three-dimensionally effect. Material, Technique and Design The plates are made of glazed porcelain. Characteristic is the cobalt blue underglaze decoration, which interacts with the molded relief. The relief structure substantially contributes to the light-dark modulation of the blue and thus to the three-dimensional effect. 6. Marks and Authenticity The reverse sides show the Royal Copenhagen typical markings with a crown and three waves. 7. Condition Glazes and decorations are predominantly clean and glossy. No major cracks, significant edge chips, or extensive restorations are discernible.
