Julie Shelton Smith is a painter, printmaker, and feminist artist whose work explores the female body, aging, identity, relationships, and the intersection of personal and political experience. Born and raised in Texas, she earned a BFA from the University of Texas before studying photography at the Center of the Eye School of Photography in Aspen, Colorado. She later received an MFA with Honors in Painting and Printmaking from the Rhode Island School of Design. Smith has also taught at RISD, School One in Providence, St. George’s School in Middletown, Rhode Island, and the Ah Haa School for the Arts in Telluride, Colorado. Smith has exhibited widely throughout New England, with her figurative work frequently addressing women’s lived experiences and representation. Her work was featured in Embodied: Images and Reflections of the Figure in 2001 and in the group exhibition Queer From Zero to One Hundred in New York. Her ongoing Women Over 50 project, comprising more than 100 portraits celebrating the visibility and individuality of older women, was exhibited at the Provincetown Commons in 2023. In 2000, Smith received Best in Show at the Newport Art Museum’s Members’ Juried Exhibition. Good estate condition.
