JUDY WATSON NAPANGARDI Warlpiri language, c.1925 - 2016 Hairstring at Mina Mina, 2006 acrylic on linen 122.5 x 61 cm bears Gallery Gondwana stamp verso and inscribed: Judy Napangardi Watson, 122 x 61, Dec 06, 9756JW PROVENANCE Gallery Gondwana, Northern Territory, Cat No. 9756JW Private Collection, Germany Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Gallery Gondwana Judy Watson Napangardi was born on Mt. Doreen Station, north-west of Alice Springs and grew up in Warlpiri country before relocation to Yuendumu. Her art, emerging years later, drew on the women's Dreaming of the Karnta-Kurlangu, ancestral women, whose travels across the land created sacred sites and established enduring ceremonies. This painting depicts a major women's ceremonial site known as Mina Mina, located near Lake Mackay in the Tanami Desert, north-west of Yuendumu in the Northern Territory. The central dark element represents strands of hair that is worn as belts and tassels by Warlpiri women. It is a secret and sacred connection between the women's ceremony and the country, which enables them to connect with the Dreaming. © JUDY WATSON NAPANGARDI / Copyright Agency, 2026
