Juan Chamizo - El visitante 1, XXL

Opening of a series: “The Visitors.” They are representations of people or entities, whom I have tried to strip of their physical immediacy by erasing features, a little within the personal dilemma of my painting, which reflects introspection and search, inviting reflection on the loss of identity and the sense of belonging to a place and its culture. Juan Chamizo, born in Madrigalejo, Cáceres, Spain, is an artist whose work focuses on exploring the human being through iconic portraiture and personal and cultural relationships. After emigrating to Venezuela in 1978, where he resided for more than 40 years, his work was enriched with influences from the Caribbean and Europe, reflecting his experience as a returning emigrant and the complexity of cultural mestizaje. His work has been exhibited in various galleries and museums, mainly in Venezuela and Latin America, but also in Europe, and is part of private and public collections in several countries. His artistic practice is characterized by a particular use of texture and color, approaching figurative expressionism. To achieve his textures, he uses a special spatula that he designed himself, inspired by the expressiveness, in the scarifications of faces and bodies of some African peoples. This technique personalizes and unifies his works, in which he often combines figurative and abstract elements. Since his return to Spain in 2018, Juan Chamizo has continued to participate in group exhibitions in cities such as Madrid, Barcelona and Melilla, consolidating his career and presence in the contemporary art scene."
