Jost Amman (1539–1591) – Wolf Hunt – Original Hand-Coloured Woodcut – 1582 Artist: Jost Amman (1539–1591) Title: Wolf Hunt – Vom Jagen (On Hunting) Date: 1582 Origin: Frankfurt am Main, Germany Publication: Neuw Jag vnnd Weydwerck Buch, published by Sigmund Feyerabend, Frankfurt am Main, 1582 Technique: Original woodcut on paper, hand-coloured Pages: 235–236, original double-sided book leaf Frame dimensions: 29 × 24 cm Visible area (sight size): 18 × 15 cm Provenance: Formerly Buch- und Kunstantiquariat Hans Marcus, Düsseldorf, Germany DESCRIPTION Original hand-coloured Renaissance woodcut by Jost Amman (1539–1591), from the Neuw Jag vnnd Weydwerck Buch, published in Frankfurt am Main by Sigmund Feyerabend in 1582. This remarkable 16th-century illustration depicts a historical wolf hunt, featuring a mounted hunter, another hunter on foot, and numerous hunting dogs pursuing a wolf through a wooded landscape. Hunting nets and traditional trapping equipment are visible in the background. The detailed composition demonstrates the characteristic precision of Renaissance woodcut engraving, with finely executed lines, expressive figures, and an atmospheric landscape. The illustration has been carefully hand-coloured in attractive shades of green, brown, blue, and red, enhancing the original woodcut design. The front of the historical book leaf bears page number 235 and the chapter heading "Vom Jagen" (On Hunting). Below the illustration appears the historical German proverb: "Er darf wie ein Wolff in der Hecken." The reverse, numbered page 236, contains the beginning of Chapter 12, entitled: "Wie man die Wölff in Wolffsgruben fällen/und mit andern Instrumenten fangen soll." This chapter describes traditional methods of capturing wolves using wolf pits and other hunting devices. The original book leaf is printed on both sides and is presented in a traditional frame with a passe-partout. The reverse side of the historical leaf is also visible. An interesting example of German Renaissance printmaking, early illustrated book production, and European hunting history. PROVENANCE The reverse of the frame retains an original historical antiquarian label from the former Buch- und Kunstantiquariat Hans Marcus, Grabenstraße 11a, Düsseldorf, Germany. The label identifies the work as: "Von der Spur oder Insiegel des Wolfes – original Holzschnitt, handkoloriert von Jost Amman 1582." This historical label documents the previous attribution and forms part of the object's provenance history. DIMENSIONS Frame: 29 × 24 cm Visible image area: 18 × 15 cm The woodcut is mounted in an older frame with a passe-partout, allowing the historical illustration to be presented attractively. CONDITION Good age-related condition, with natural paper patina, minor discolouration, and occasional age-related spotting. The woodcut illustration is well preserved, with fine details clearly visible. The hand-colouring retains attractive and vibrant colours. The historical book leaf is presented in an older frame. The exact date of the hand-colouring has not been independently established. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the description and condition report.
