Josef Eberz (1880–1942). ".. in demselben Augenblicke rannte er sich wütend selber meine Degenspitze in die Brust". ["...at that very moment, in a fit of rage, he ran himself onto the tip of my sword."]. Hand-signed etching. Sheet numbered (32/33). Deluxe edition limited to only 30 copies. From a portfolio containing 33 original etchings for the novel *Ahnung und Gegenwart* (Presentiment and Presence) by Josef Freiherr von Eichendorff. Published by Benno Filser Kunstverlag, Stuttgart, 1919. Printed by Franz Hanfstaengl, Munich/Stuttgart. Mounted in its original mat. Sheet size: 36 x 26 cm. See the exhibition catalogue from Limburg (his birthplace), 1986, p. 46 et seq. The great Josef Eberz exhibited alongside masters such as Vincent van Gogh, Paul Cézanne, and Pablo Picasso. He was a major figure in German Expressionism who successfully incorporated influences from Cubism, Italian Futurism, and Metaphysical painting. Unfortunately, during the Nazi regime his work was classified as "degenerate art" (Entartete Kunst), which led to the confiscation and destruction of much of his work.
