All auctions / Contemporary Art / José Júlio Calasans Neto (1932–2006) - Sirenas

Two works: Title: Calazans Neto (Brazil, 1932-2006) - Mermaid / Iemanjá - Unique monotype, 1993 Description: Unique monotype (1/1) signed in pencil and dated "93" by Calazans Neto, a pivotal figure of Bahian modernism. On a sea of undulating green fringes, a mermaid with floating hair and a nearly black purple tail arches in full motion. It is a direct image from the Iemanjá imaginary, the ocean’s orixá, who in Salvador gathers Candomblé, popular devotion, and syncretism with the Virgin, and to whom flowers and gifts are offered into the sea every February 2nd. Calazans Neto was born in Salvador, trained as an architect, and belonged to the generation of Carybé and Mário Cravo, who gave visual form to the Afro-Brazilian identity of the city. His frank gesturality, with visible brushstrokes and irregular margins, and his palette of greens, purples, and ochres are instantly recognizable. Provenance: on the reverse is the adhesive label of the III Ibero-American Conference, Scientific Conference "Science and Technology for the Sustainable Development of Ibero-America," Salvador (Bahia), July 4–7, 1993, the same year the work was executed. FILE 2 Title: Calazans Neto (Brazil, 1932-2006) - Mermaid with flowers - Monotype, 1993 Description: Monotype signed in pencil and dated "93" by Calazans Neto. A mermaid with her back turned, in golden ochres, rests on a tail of purple scales, between deep green and a turquoise-blue sea speckled with violet flowers. It is the most decorative and luminous piece in the series, and evokes the Bahian tradition of offering flowers to Iemanjá, the ocean’s orixá, central to the popular festival on February 2 in Salvador. Calazans Neto, trained as an architect and a contemporary of Carybé and Mário Cravo, translated the universe of bodies, sea, and Afro-Brazilian mythology of his hometown into his graphic work. Provenance: on the reverse is the adhesive label from the III Ibero-American Conference, Scientific Conference, Salvador (Bahia), July 4–7, 1993. Shipped with certificate and good packaging.
