[Schuytvlot 801; Unger 612] Joost van den Vondel (1587-1679) was a Dutch poet and playwright whose output encompasses many genres: occasional poetry, emblematic poetry, satires, lampoons, praise poems and heroic epic. The controversy around Oldenbarnevelt and Maurice was for example the impetus for Vondel to write 'Palamedes'.
