[Schuytvlot 801; Unger 612] Joost van den Vondel (1587-1679) was a Dutch poet and playwright whose output includes many genres: occasional poetry, emblematic poetry, satires, lampoons, panegyrics and heroic epic. The controversy surrounding Oldenbarnevelt and Maurits was, for example, the stimulus for Vondel to write Palamedes.
