Provenance: The collection of the Earls of Haddington Gilbert Burnet (1690-1726) was the son of Gilbert Burnet (1643-1715), the Scottish philosopher, historian and Bishop of Salisbury. The present portrait was presumably painted to commemorate the sitter’s appointment as Chaplain to King George I in 1718.
