PALMER, James F. (1804-1871) 'The Works of John Hunter, FRS with notes', in Five volumes (Four Volumes of Text plus one Volume of Plates). Pub. LONDON: Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown, Green and Longman, 1837. Collations: Vol 1. Portrait, title, [1] leaf, pp vii-xix, 644pp. Vol 2. Title, [2] leaves, pp ix-xvi, 488pp. Vol 3. Title, [2] leaves, pp ix-xx, 675pp. Vol 4 Title, [3]leaves, pp xi-xiii, xl pp, 506pp. vol 5 Plates; Portrait [of John Hunter], title, pp3-27 :: 60 plates. Sir James Frederick Palmer (1804-1871) was a great-nephew of the artist Sir Joshua Reynolds, was a surgeon of London who came to Australia in 1839 and became the first mayor of Melbourne and later President of the Legislative Assembly. John Hunter (1728-1793) was a Senior Surgeon to the St George's and St James's Dispensary, Fellow of the Royal Medical and Chirurgical Society of London. There are several issues of the text volumes with varying dates, some are dated 1835, others with 1835 and 1837 on same volumes, others like this set with 1837 on all. 'Plate volume always dated 1837. Vol 1-4: half calf with marbled boards and gold embossed spine, some shelf wear, minor tanning and foxing, profile portrait of John Hunter frontispiece. One title label is missing. Given to KF Russell by Sir William George Dismore Upjohn (1888-1979), renowned Australian Surgeon and Founding Member of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, with his signatures and a note that the text volumes came from the library of Sir Harry Brookes Allen (1854-1926), Professor of Pathology and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Melbourne. References: Russell 448. Bookplate: Ex Libris Anatomica KF Russell (215x132mm). Vol 5 Plates: Green buckram, some flecking, shelf wear tanning and foxing, cracks to end pages, added title page and plate index pages mis-sized, very minor tears and folding to extended plates. Frontispiece portrait after Flaxman and folding facsimile in text volumes; atlas with 14 preliminary leaves, frontispiece portrait after Joshua Reynolds, and 60 engraved plates, including the rare plate 52: “Two specimens of Siren, or Mud Iguana from South Carolina.” Complete. Belonged to Sir James Frank Colyer (1866-1954), dental surgeon, Trustee to the Hunterian Museum and Curator of the Odontological Museum, Royal College of Surgeons.
