This painting, Polder Study, shows a young fisherman on the bank of a narrow waterway in an open polder landscape. The figure stands slightly left of center and holds a long rod that runs almost horizontally through the composition. The background is deliberately sparse: low horizon lines, a few clumps of trees, and loose blocks of color suggest the expansive landscape without explicit detailing. The work is executed in oil on canvas. The painting technique is loose and sketchy, with clearly visible brushstrokes and a subdued palette of gray-green, ocher, and earth tones. The warmer skin tones of the boy form the main color accent. The direct brushwork, simplified forms, and atmospheric treatment of the landscape align with the impressionist painting style of the late Hague School. On the reverse is ‘J.E. Akkeringa – Polder Study’. Dimensions of work: 30 × 40 cm. Dimensions with frame: 41 × 50 cm. Artist biography Johannes Evert Hendrik Akkeringa (1861–1942) was a Dutch painter who is regarded as part of the late Hague School. He became best known for dune and beach scenes, in which fisherwomen and children frequently appear as motifs, but he also painted landscapes, figure studies, and flower still lifes. His work is characterized by a loose, refined brushwork, a nuanced use of color, and great attention to light and atmosphere. Simonis & Buunk Akkeringa is represented in the collection of the Kunstmuseum Den Haag, which owns several paintings by him, including Pension Guests (1909), Two Children in the Garden, and Mother with Children in the Dunes. These works document both his figurative subjects and his characteristic treatment of Dutch outdoor life.
