This is the official defense speech and political testament of Landsadvocaat Johan van Oldenbarnevelt, printed just before his arrest and eventual beheading at the Binnenhof. Published by the official state printer Hillebrandt Jacobsz. This tract marks the height of the truce tensions during the Twelve Years' Truce (1609–1621). In this Remonstrance the 71-year-old statesman looks back on his impressive forty-year career in the service of the Republic. He passionately defends his policy against accusations of treason by his political opponents and Prince Maurits. It ultimately availed nothing: on 29 August 1618 Van Oldenbarnevelt was arrested, to be executed in May 1619. This pamphlet is thus a direct, tangible witness to one of the most dramatic political trials in Dutch history.
