Full brown leather binding with defects to the hinges and missing the upper headcap. Spine with five ribs, with gold tooling and the title and author gilded in an ochre panel. Red edges. Flyleaf, 1 blank leaf, VIII, [19], 512, [12], 92, 19 plates, out of text, 1 blank leaf, flyleaf. Famous botanical treatise written by Johann Scheuchzer and first published in Zurich in 1719. The present copy is a subsequent yet important edition edited by Albrecht von Haller in 1775. • It is a natural history and taxonomic work devoted to grasses (Gramina), sedges (Junci), Cyperaceae (Cyperi) and related plants (Cyperoides). It represents a pioneering and fundamental work in the study of herbaceous monocotyledons before the Linnaean system. Johann Jakob Scheuchzer (Zurich, 2 August 1672 – Zurich, 23 July 1733) was a Swiss naturalist and physician. Beautiful typographic vignette on the title page, with a handwritten ownership signature. 19 fine copper-engraved botanical plates out of text, the first 8 folded several times. Diffuse though light browning, a pale stain along the lower outer margin extending about half the volume. Nevertheless, a specimen in good conservative condition, complete and usable.
