Jan Luyken (Johannes Luiken) was a poet, painter and etcher. He was born as the son of schoolmaster Caspar Luyken and Hester Coores. When he was 26, he experienced a religious awakening that led him to live a more devout life. This found expression in his poetry, which became much more edifying. Later he devoted himself to etchings and engravings that bear witness to great plasticity through precise hatching of figures and the deployment of groups of people to enhance the spatiality of the landscape. His etchings are lively, with very realistic details such as foliage, smoke and flames.
