Joanne Episcopo Castoriensi (Johannes Baptista)...

A remarkably well-preserved, finely gilt-tooled mottled calf binding housing this major 17th-century Catholic polemical work by Johannes van Neercassel, Apostolic Vicar of Holland. It defends traditional Catholic restrictions and guidance regarding vernacular Bible reading against Protestant principles of sola scriptura and private interpretation. This edition includes the crucial second treatise, Dissertatio de Interprete Scripturarum, establishing traditional Catholic hermeneutics and defending ecclesiastical authority against Protestant private interpretation.
