Joan Vives Maristany (XX) - Barcas en la Costa

Title: Boats on the Coast ㅤ School: Spanish School (twentieth century) ㅤ Author: Joan Vives Maristany (1901–1932) ㅤ Style: Mediterranean Impressionism ㅤ Technique: Oil on canvas ㅤ Condition: Good overall conservation status, with signs of the work’s age and it presents restorations. ㅤ Circle and artistic influence: The work is framed within the Spanish landscape and marine painting tradition of the early twentieth century, with a clear proximity to Mediterranean painting and to the luminous naturalism developed by numerous Levantine and Catalan artists. The use of rapid, impastoed, visible brushstrokes, together with a palette dominated by blues, ochres, greens and whites, brings the composition closer to the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist language applied to port and coastal scenes. ㅤ Joan Vives Maristany (1901–1932) was a Spanish painter active during the first decades of the twentieth century. His known production includes landscapes, beach scenes and compositions with vessels, a theme that appears recurrently in works registered on the auction market. His painting is characterized by a direct treatment of the landscape and by a dynamic brushstroke associated with the Mediterranean tradition. ㅤ The composition depicts a group of fishing boats gathered along the coast, some still equipped with masts, rigging and nets. The vessels overlap on different planes and occupy almost the entire central area of the scene, generating a dynamic composition and marked horizontal emphasis. In the background the sea stretches out, bounded by a distant mountain range under a clear sky with a few light clouds. ㅤ The execution stands out for an energetic brushstroke rich in matter, especially evident on the boats, the shore and the reflections of the water. The touches of orange, green, brown and black provide contrast against the bluish tones of the sky and sea, while the light touches suggest the reflections of Mediterranean light on the surfaces. ㅤ The work is presented with a gilded wooden frame, wide profile and straight lines, with a stepped moulding and a slightly aged finish. Its warm tone harmonizes with the ochres and earth tones present in the composition. ㅤ Observations: Restorations present. ㅤ The work may incur damage during transport even with proper packaging.
